Biography

Gina Torres is best known for playing Zoë Washburne on Joss Whedon’s cult series Firefly and the follow-up feature film Serenity (2005), as well as Jessica Pearson on the critically acclaimed series Suits. Her role onSuits has garnered her a 2013 NHMC Impact Awards for ‘Outstanding Performance in a Television Series’ and a 2018 Imagen Award for ‘Best Supporting Actress/Television’, as well as her own spin-off series, Pearson, set to premiere in Summer 2019.

A New York native, Torres had several guest spots in 1990s TV series like Law & Order, NYPD Blue, and Profiler.She entered the world of action-adventure TV with guest or recurring roles in series such as Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, La Femme Nikita, and Alias. In 2000, she was cast in one of the lead roles, Helen 'Hel' Carter, on Cleopatra 2525, for which she won the 2001 Alma Award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Syndicated Drama Series’. Soon after Firefly ended, she was cast in the recurring role of Jasmine on another Joss Whedon series, Angel. More recent TV credits include Gossip Girl, Castle, Hannibal, Revenge, and Westworld.

On the big screen, she played Cas in both The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix: Revolutions (2003), Marcella in Hair (2003), Aicha in Five Fingers (2006), and Brenda Cooper in I Think I Love My Wife (2007). Her voice work includes DC hero Vixen on Justice League Unlimited, Airachnid on Transformers: Prime and Ketsu Onyo on both Star Wars Rebels and Forces of Destiny, as well as Superwoman on the DC animated feature Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010) and the 2018 video game, Lego DC Super-Villains. She also played Ikora Rey, a Warlock Vanguard, on the highly successful Bungie video game franchise Destiny.
